Revolution and Counter-Revolution - A Public Lecture by Dr Jonathan Spyer
You are cordially invited by
The Centre for Muslim States and Societies, UWA to
A Public Lecture by
Dr Jonathan Spyer

Renowned Journalist
Dr Jonathan Spyer will look into the origins and progress of the uprising against the rule of Bashar Assad in Syria. The lecture will focus on the as yet unsuccessful attempts of the opposition to unite, and the determined campaign of the regime to crush the revolt by force. Dr Spyer will give background details and an assessment of both the regime and the insurgency, and will ask why it has been that unlike in other countries which experienced civilian uprisings in 2011, in Syria, the regime has so far managed to survive. Dr Spyer visited Idlib Province Syria in February and will provide evidence and information gathered in the course of that visit as part of the lecture.
Jonathan Spyer is London-born, and studied for a masters degree in the politics of the modern Middle East via the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. He has lived in Jerusalem for the past 16 years and was employed as an adviser on international affairs at the Israeli Ministry of National Infrastructure. In 2003 he received his PhD in international relations, and has a senior research fellowship at the Global Research in International Affairs Centre, the international affairs think-tank of the Inter-Disciplinary Centre in Herzliya.
Jonathan Spyer’s articles and analysis of the current political situation in the Middle East have been published in a number of important journals, including the Guardian, Haaretz, the Jerusalem Post, MERIA, the Forward and others.
